Thirteenth in a Series: Adult Coloring Book, "The Lawyers of Trump-Russia" (feat. Emmet Flood)

by Diane Klein

With the belated arrival of Pat Cipollone as White House counsel on December 10, 2018 (he was named on October 13, 2018), Emmet Flood returns to his prior role: managing the Russia investigation on behalf of the White House.  Prior to joining the Trump Administration in May, 2018, Flood's experience included the representation of a bipartisan laundry list of high-profile political clients, including both Bill and Hillary Clinton, as well as Dick Cheney.  Flood, who clerked for Justice Scalia in 1993-1994 (the same year Neil Gorsuch clerked for Justice Kennedy), shares a deep Catholicism with both his late boss and his successor Cipollone; Flood's Ph.D. in philosophy, earned before his J.D., focused on St. Augustine (he of "Da mihi castitatem et continentiam, sed noli modo").

Flood stepped up to succeed Don McGahn while one of the worst hurricane seasons on record wound down (Hurricane Michael, among the worst storms in recorded U.S. history, took place just the week before).  But while the White House was hardly calm, neither a White House subpoena nor a Supreme Court nomination took place during the unusually long period awaiting the completion of Cipollone's security clearance. Cipollone can expect stormier weather.
