Middle Class Dreams

by Neil H. Buchanan

Jotwell: The Journal of Things We Like (Lots) has just published my annual "jot," in which I review an article by Professor Lisa Philipps of Osgoode Hall Law School in Toronto.  In her article, Professor Philipps brilliantly describes how Canada's experiment with an expanded version of retirement savings accounts (in lieu of anything like Social Security) creates a self-reinforcing notion of what it means to be part of the middle class in Canada.  (In a comment on the jot, Professor Philipps reports that Canada has very recently changed its system in some promising ways.)

Normally, I would write a full-length Dorf on Law post expanding on my Jotwell review, but the blogging schedule right now is so packed with other matters that that will have to wait.  Sometime after Election Day, I hope to write about Professor Philipps's important insights and how they apply down here, south of the border.  (Depending on what happens on Election Day, I might be on the other side of that border.)

In the meantime, this rare Sunday post will serve as an advertisement for both the Philipps piece and my short review on Jotwell.
