In my opinion, not only is 3D not any better, it's way worse because those "glasses" aren't exactly the most comfortable things.

It's nowhere nearly as immersive (is that a word?) as an IMAX dome.

I thought Avatar no better or worse in 3D than 2D,...

I thought Avatar no better or worse in 3D than 2D, or 8D for that matter, since I didn't see it!

On a more serious note, the studios' investment in 3D may be an effort to further differentiate their product. Most people who watch stuff online see it in low-res, so 3D (whether in the theater or at home) can be sold as a very different experience.

I also would have to agree that the 3D in Avatar greatly enhanced the immersive and general "awesomeness" of the environment. And, having seen both the Digital 3D and IMAX 3D versions, I would say that Avatar was really intended to be enjoyed in IMAX 3D,as it added yet another level of depth and richness. I would say that Avatar should be regarded as an IMAX 3D movie, that happened to be shown in Digital 3D and 2D because IMAX theaters aren't the norm. But it's really not in the same category as Monsters vs. Aliens, etc.

I have agreed with you on the past comments on 3D. Not so on Avatar. I saw both the 3D and 2D versions and I am actually hoping that the blue ray comes with a 3D version for home as well. I certainly agree both were visually stunning, but for the first time I can recall, I felt 3D here actually made for a more immersive experience. YMMV, and in this case obviously did.

I don't think the difference was large, but I do think 3D improved the visual presentation. It certainly does not make or break the film - the 2D version is spectacular as well. Visually, that is. The story telling was very good, but as you say, nothing original.
